llms.txt generator
AI SearchCreate an llms.txt file that gives AI tools a short summary of your site, key facts and a curated list of your most useful pages. Free, no signup, and it runs entirely in your browser.
Upload to your site root so it lives at /llms.txt.
How to use it
- Enter your site or brand name, a one-sentence summary and any key facts.
- Edit or add sections, listing links one per line as Title | URL | short note.
- Copy the output or download llms.txt and upload it to your site root.
What llms.txt is
llms.txt is a proposed standard, published at llmstxt.org, for a Markdown file that sits at the root of a website and gives large language models a concise guide to the site. The idea is simple: instead of an AI tool parsing navigation menus, scripts and ads, it can read one short file that says what the site is and links to the pages that matter most.
The format is straightforward. It starts with an H1 containing the site name, then a blockquote summary, optional plain paragraphs with key details, and H2 sections containing lists of links with optional short descriptions. This tool builds that structure for you.
What it can and cannot do today
Be realistic about the payoff. llms.txt is a proposal, not an adopted web standard, and the major AI search products have not publicly confirmed that they use it when deciding what to retrieve or cite. Some documentation sites and developer tools use it, and some AI coding tools read it, but there is no evidence that adding the file will on its own make your business appear in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews.
So why make one? It takes a few minutes, it costs nothing, and it forces a useful exercise: summarizing your business in one sentence and choosing the handful of pages that best answer customer questions. If adoption grows, you are already set up. Our article on llms.txt explained covers the background in more detail.
Writing a good file
Keep the summary factual and specific: what you do, who for, and where. A local business should name its city and service area. Put stable, verifiable facts in the key facts box, such as hours, insurance or payment options, and service coverage. Avoid marketing claims that a model could repeat back inaccurately.
For sections, group links the way a customer would think: services, pricing, locations, policies, help articles. Use clear titles and add a short note when the title alone is vague. Link only to public, indexable pages, and keep the list curated rather than exhaustive. A short file with your best twenty pages is more useful than a dump of every URL.
What actually drives AI visibility
The things with clearer evidence behind them are the same fundamentals that help search: crawlable pages, clear answers to real questions, consistent business information, and being mentioned on sources AI tools already trust. Questions, answered
Do ChatGPT, Google or Perplexity use llms.txt?
None of the major AI search products have publicly confirmed using llms.txt to choose what to retrieve or cite. The file is a proposed standard from llmstxt.org with growing but limited adoption, mostly among documentation and developer sites. Treat it as a low-cost extra, not a replacement for crawlable, well-structured pages.
Where should I upload llms.txt?
Upload it to the root of your domain so it is available at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt, the same way robots.txt works. Serve it as plain text or Markdown with a 200 status. If you use a CMS that does not allow root files, a redirect or a hosting-level rule can usually serve it.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. Robots.txt tells crawlers which URLs they may request, and reputable bots follow it. llms.txt does not grant or block access; it is a guide that summarizes your site and points to important pages. To control which AI crawlers can access your site, use robots.txt rules instead.
How often should I update my llms.txt file?
Update it whenever the facts or key pages change: new services, moved URLs, new locations, or changed hours and policies. Check the links occasionally to make sure none redirect or return errors. A stale file that points to dead pages or outdated details is worse than a short, accurate one.
