Article schema generator
SchemaBuild Article, BlogPosting or NewsArticle JSON-LD with headline, author, dates, image and publisher in a few fields. Free, no signup, and it runs entirely in your browser.
How to use it
- Choose BlogPosting, Article or NewsArticle from the Type menu.
- Fill in headline, description, URL, image, dates, author and publisher.
- Click "Copy code" and paste the script into that article's page.
What article markup tells search engines
Article structured data describes a piece of written content: what it is called, who wrote it, who published it, when it went live and when it last changed. Search engines can usually work this out from the page, but explicit markup removes ambiguity, especially around authorship and dates.
That matters more than it used to. Search engines and AI systems increasingly weigh who stands behind a piece of content. A clear author name linked to a real profile page is a simple, honest way to show that a person with relevant experience wrote it.
Picking the right type
- BlogPosting fits most company blog posts, guides and how-to articles.
- Article is the general type. Use it for evergreen resources or reports that are not really blog posts.
- NewsArticle is for time-sensitive reporting from a news publisher. A business blog post is not news just because it is recent.
All three accept the same properties in this tool, so switching type does not change the fields you need.
Getting the details right
- Headline. Keep it close to the visible H1. Shorter headlines are safer, since very long ones may be truncated where they are displayed.
- Image. Use a real image from the article, hosted at a crawlable URL. Large, high-resolution images are the safer choice; the hint in the form suggests at least 1200 pixels wide as a practical rule of thumb.
- Dates. Published is the first date the article went live. Last updated should change only when you make a meaningful edit, not when you fix a typo or re-save the page.
- Author. Use a real person's name and link to their bio or profile page on your site. If the content is genuinely written by your organization as a whole, name the organization instead.
- Publisher. Your business name and a logo URL.
The tool also adds mainEntityOfPage pointing to the article URL, which states that this article is the main content of that page.
Placing and testing the code
Add the script to the page of the article it describes, not site-wide. Most blogging platforms and SEO plugins can output article markup automatically, so check for an existing block first; two competing blocks with different dates send mixed signals.
After publishing, run the URL through our JSON-LD validator and Google's testing tools. Pair this with breadcrumb markup to describe where the article sits in your site.
Questions, answered
Should I use Article or BlogPosting for my blog?
BlogPosting is the natural fit for posts on a company blog. It is a more specific kind of Article, so anything that understands Article also understands BlogPosting. Use NewsArticle only if you publish actual news reporting. The choice rarely makes a dramatic difference, but accuracy is best.
When should I change the last updated date?
Change it when you make a substantial update, such as revising advice, adding a section or correcting facts. Do not bump it for typo fixes or just to look fresh. Readers and search engines both notice when a recent date sits on content that has not changed.
What if my article has more than one author?
The schema allows author to be a list of people. This tool generates a single author, so for co-written pieces you can edit the copied code and turn the author value into an array of Person objects, each with a name and profile URL.
My CMS already adds article schema. Do I need this?
Check first. Many blogging platforms and SEO plugins output article markup automatically. If yours does and the details are correct, you do not need a second block. Use this tool when your platform adds nothing, or when you want to replace incomplete or incorrect output.
